Elementary Programs

Mathematics

Illustrative Mathematics (IM) is Brentwood’s new math series, adopted for the 2022-2023 school year.  IM is designed to help students develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, build fluency with procedures, and solve mathematical problems that reflect their lived experiences.

English Language Arts

Fundations is based on the Wilson Reading System principles providing research-based materials and strategies essential to a comprehensive reading, spelling, and handwriting program.  This program lays the foundational skills for our youngest learners in learning how to read.

Into Reading is the the District's primary reading series, adopted for the 2023-2024 school year.  Into Reading provides resources for instruction in foundational skills including phonics and phonemic awareness, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, reading, and writing. With the Into Reading Program, we also have the digital programs Waggle and Amira, supporting our learners reading skills digitally.

Amira is an AI coach which works with students directly on foundational reading skills that students are learning.  As students read with Amira, she helps them understand and corrects mistakes.

Waggle pulls information about student's reading abilities from the MAP Assessments given, and places students on an individualized learning plan accordingly.  Teachers can also assign Waggle skills based on skills the whole class has learned with the Into Reading program.

Both of these programs supplement our teachers' lessons to provide additional support or extension for students based on their needs.

Social Studies

Into Social Studies explores the past and present, inviting learners to tackle challenging questions about our global community while providing teachers with the tools they need.  The students reference magazines about important issues to learn about these topics in new ways.

Science

In the elementary science program, teachers use inquiry-based science material and curricula formerly supplied by ASSET STEM Education.  These programs are from Engineering is Elementary, Carolina Biological, and STC science.  New science standards are being adopted in the state of Pennsylvania for implementation in the 2025-2026 school year and our teachers have started exploring professional learning experiences with educators from Penn State University about the new standards and embedding those learning experiences in the classroom.

Students also receive regular instruction in Art, Media Literacy, Music, Health and PE on a weekly rotation.  Additionally, students participate in lessons with the school counselor focused on social and personal development.
